Camping

We were getting all the info as we were rolling along the first day. At one point Les said “.... or you might like to sleep under the stars.” Yessss, I thought! I'd slept under the stars in a swag when at Uluru and Kings Canyon Station back in May and it was magic. So first night I helped someone put up a tent and take it down to learn how to do it.
The first night at Tilmouth Well there were showers and toilets. Hot water if not much pressure. The second night at Rabbit Flat … no facilities. During that day we'd had to use bush toilets …. i.e. squatting in the spinifex behind a bush, distant enough from everyone so you felt most comfortable – or least uncomfortable!! A special treat at camp that night was a bush dunny – a portable thunderbox placed over a hole in the ground, again behind a distant bush. Ah, the bliss of motel accommodation in Halls Creek on Night Three and luxury at Cable Beach when we finally got there! In between was two nights at Purnululu (The Bungle Bungles). Drop toilets and a canvas shower, the shower being another first for me. Interesting in the dark, too! I put up a tent to use as a dressing room those nights but still slept out. Back to no tent at Fitzroy Crossing, and because the well-appointed shower block was a bit of a hike away, changed at my stretcher under cover of darkness. Game or what?! Ha!!
The food is good and there's plenty of it. No reason why that shouldn't continue to be the case. It hasn't taken long for everyone to get into the routine of setting up and taking down the camp kitchen and dining room, washing the dishes, etc. Afterwards, sitting by a campfire before hitting the hay – or sleeping bag on stretcher - can't be beaten.
Needless to say, when we're able to have campfires, that's pretty special.
